SAN LORENZO

Check out Via Faenza for San Lorenzo’s primary hostel scene. Proximity to the train station and the cheap food at the Mercato Centrale make this neighborhood one of the best places to stay in Florence.

OSTELLO ARCHI ROSSI

V. Faenza 94r

You’ll have the best of times, you’ll have the worst of times. The hostel’s staff are sometimes too busy to care about your Wi-Fi difficulties or the miniature lake on your bathroom floor. But when you’re strolling through the garden or past the graffitied walls gripping a free cappuccino and snacking on giant portions of pasta for a mere €2.50, your anger will melt away. Choose your room wisely—the lower the floor the better—to avoid the damp, overcrowded bathrooms on the upper floors. Lockers come with keys to keep out nosy roommates, but the luggage area is only under video surveillance. Despite its cons, this is definitely one of the best values in Florence, particularly for solo travelers on a budget.

From the train station, take V. Nazionale and turn left onto V. Faenza.

Breakfast included. Beer sold at desk. Wi-Fi available. Rooms are equipped with computers.

Dorms €21-27; singles €40.

Reception 6:30am-2am. Curfew 2am; some travelers report that if you ring the doorbell, the door will open regardless of the hour.

SOGGIORNO ANNAMARIA/KATTI HOUSE

If you’re traveling with friends and don’t mind sharing queen-sized beds, don’t hesitate to stay here. With exposed-beam ceilings, grandfather clocks, and an unusually enthusiastic staff, this bright bed and breakfast—which is split into Soggiorno Annamaria and Katti House—wants to be your home away from home. Plus, they keep it all in the family: the brother of the titular Annamaria puts his 30 years of culinary experience to use, serving local specialties in the on-site restaurant (primi €6-8, secondi €4-14; three-course meal €25-30).

On V. Faenza, look for the doorway with all the Let’s Go stickers.

Breakfast of cappuccino, croissant, and biscottini included. A/C. Wi-Fi available only in Katti house, but those staying at Soggiorno Annamaria are welcome to use it.

Soggiorno Annamaria singles €65-100. Katti House singles €75; doubles and triples €120-130.

HOTEL ESTER

Largo Alinari 15, 2nd fl.

Don’t let the grimy stairs or flimsy-looking elevator of the building’s shared entryway put you off of these clean, colorful rooms near the train station. Your feet will love the cool hardwood after a long day’s trek, and the rest of your body will appreciate the kitchen, flat screen TV, and air-conditioning. Inquire at reception, which is decorated with terrain maps of Italy, about special deals for larger groups.

From the train station, turn left at the McDonald’s; Hotel Ester is about 1 block down on the right. Luna Rossa is across the street, but shares Hotel Ester’s reception.

Mar-Oct doubles €75, with bath €90; Nov-Feb €55/60.

Three rooms with double windows to keep out the street noise face V. Nazionale, while a fourth faces the courtyard with a view of monuments that casually peek over the back wall.
